Moms In Touch

Moms In Touch International is a prayer group whose mission is to have every school in every nation covered in prayer. Is your child's school one of them?

This week marks the beginning of and Rockwood's school year. For me, that means that right out of the starting gate, I will meet with a group of moms to pray for my children, their teachers, administrators, and classmates, and their school. Because my children are officially in two separate schools now, it means that I will belong to two groups under the covering of prayer governed by the Moms In Touch International (MITI) organization.

MITI was founded by Fern Nichols in 1984 after she had apprehensions and fears that grew out of her children entering middle school. Over-riding those fears was a deep faith in God and knowing that prayer would make a difference. Calling like-minded moms together, she formed the first formal prayer group, which now encompasses every state in our nation and 130 countries world wide.

MITI has a mission statement and a set of core values based on a non-denominational Christian faith.  Each group is asked to register, updating the roster as new moms join or move into other groups. Fern's vision is to have every school in every nation covered under prayer. An impossible feat? Perhaps. In order to bridge that gap, each group is asked if they would consider praying for a short time each week for a school without a group.

For my elementary school group, our prayer time includes a St. Louis City school, and three international countries (which we rotate). The format is structured. There are attributes of God prayer sheets that guide us through the prayer. It begins with thanksgiving, confession, intercession (for our children, classrooms, teachers, administrators, and our school as a whole). Finally, we end our time with MITI concerns and praises.

Being a part of this group for 5 years has been life-changing for me. No longer do I passively spend my day worrying about my kids in their school environment. I am actively seeking God to bring Him my concerns; and also quick to give Him the glory when we see prayers answered. Because our administration supports our mission, they will let us know specifically what the prayer needs are within the school, without betraying any confidences. What is prayed in the group, stays in the group.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, go to the website and find a group.  If one does not yet exist for your child's school, find just one other mom and begin a new chapter. It is an honor and privilege to live in a country where I can publicly meet and profess my faith through prayer. As a parent, this is one of the greatest gifts I can give my kids. I know that even if no other person is praying for a particular child by name in our school, we are. I know no other activity that one hour of my time per week has such a far reaching impact in my life and in the lives of the children and teachers in my community.
