  • Whiz Kids Accomplishment: Emily is this week's Whiz Kid, not for one reason but for many. As her mother Michelle said, “Emily doesn't let any grass grow under her feet.”

Emily is involved in dance, marching band, and dance. Each of her activities has a philanthropic portion to it. She has been dancing for 14 years and decided it was time to give back. This year, she took time out of her busy schedule to teach several girls who can't afford dance lessons some ballet moves. Her grandmother, a teacher in the St. Louis Public School District, found some interested third-graders, and Emily met with them after school. “Even though we've only met five times, I think they really enjoy it and are learning something, like how much discipline dance takes," Emily said.

  • Emily is also involved in two scout programs. The Boy Scouts of America Venturing Program that is open to boys and girls as well as Girl Scouts, in which she is a Bronze Award recipient, the third highest award a girl can receive. She is currently working on her Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can receive.

To earn the Gold Award, the girl scout must complete a service project that benefits the community. “I am planning to do something combining dance and music,” Emily said.

  • Emily plays the flute and would love to teach others to play.

    • Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Emily thinks that giving back to the community is something that she is obligated to do. “I have been given the opportunity to learn so much fun stuff. If I can give just a little of that to someone, I feel good about myself,” Emily said.
