Westminster Christian Academy Student Awarded for Excellence in Scientific Research

Westminster student, Ciarra Peters, has been named winner of the LMI Aerospace Inc./D3 Technologies Award for Excellence in Research. The award was presented to thirty-five students who distinguished themselves during the 2013 Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis this summer.

Peter’s award-winning research paper was completed under the supervision of Dr. Ruth Okamoto of Washington University, and titled “Construction and testing of anisotropic white matter tissue mimics: a tool for the study of traumatic brain injury.”

Peters recently presented her paper at the 2013 LMI Awards for Excellence in Research dinner to a group of peers, parents, and research mentors. Her research was reviewed by senior scientists from UMSL, Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville, Monsanto, LMI Aerospace Inc., and Confluence Life Sciences.

Each year, the STARS program, pairs high-achieving junior and senior high school students with top research scientists and mentors from a host of leading institutions, including the Donald Danforth Planet Science Center, Saint Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis, and UMSL.

Peters joined other students from the St. Louis metro area, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, and Greece this summer to work as a student apprentice to expert scientists, assisting in laboratories and completing research projects.
