Wednesday, August 14, will mark the start of a school year of "firsts" for 7th graders at Westminster Christian Academy.

As school doors open, new Head of School Dr. Tom Stoner will be present to greet students and welcome them to a new academic year. Also for the first time, 7th grade students will begin middle school at Westminster equipped with iPads for academic use.

The Westminster’s iPad program slowly took off in 2012-13. After thorough research and surveying, the school implemented a non-mandatory, small-scale version of the program with great success.

To make the transition to digital texts as smooth as possible this year, Westminster has offered students and parents training in setting up and operating the iPad, as well as multiple options to prevent the purchase from being a hardship for families.

“In the 21st century, kids are growing up with ever-changing mobile technology all around them,” says Head of Middle School Steve Hall. “This tool gives them the flexibility to go in any number of directions as they learn.”

Tom Stoner began his tenure as head of school at Westminster on July 1. Born and raised in Wheaton, Illinois, he received an undergraduate degree from Wheaton College, a Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts, and a Doctor of Education degree from Boston University.

Previously, he served for 16 years as head of school at Covenant Christian Academy and was instrumental in overseeing the school’s growth in enrollment, the addition of grades 9 through 12, and the relocation of the school to a new state-of-the-art facility.

“I am honored to join the remarkable Westminster faculty, staff, and community,“ Stoner says. “I look forward to see the good things God has in mind for the future of this beloved school.”

Westminster Christian Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school serving 985 students in grades 7–12. Westminster provides an academically diverse student body with knowledge in the traditional liberal arts and the skills and wisdom to apply that knowledge, encouraging students to embrace a biblical worldview and integrate it into every area of life.  For more information, visit www.wcastl.org.
