Cancer Support Community Offers Kid Support™ Family Support Group and Educational Program for Children and Teens Coping with Cancer in the Family

St. Louis, MO (August 22, 2013) –Approximately one in four adults diagnosed with cancer has minor children in their home. When cancer is in the family, children are often the most underserved individuals in terms of emotional support.

Cancer Support Community of Greater St. Louis (CSC) addresses this need in our community by offering a new 7 week session of Kid Support™,  a series of weekly support groups for children and teens (ages 5-18—divided into age groups), who have a parent, grandparent, or other adult family member with cancer.  This program is led by licensed therapists experienced in working with children affected by cancer in the family. Kid Support™ includes age-appropriate activities (art, games, writing, cooking, etc.) and provides a safe space for children and teens to have conversations about their loved ones’ cancer. Sessions are 1 ½ hours.  A support group for parents, grandparents and/or other adult caretakers is held while the children and teens meet.  Adult family members learn ways to communicate with their children about their cancer and gain support from other adults. Children and adult groups begin with complimentary snack and networking.
