Fundraiser For Muslim Funeral Home Friday at West County Mosque

A fundraiser to build a "first of its kind" Muslim funeral home will be held Friday evening at the Daar-ul-Islam mosque in West County, the Post-Dispatch reports.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the event in West County will raise money for what will be Missouri's first Muslim funeral home. The need for a muslim funeral home became apparent to the idea's originator, Adil Imdad, when his cousin died and the family dealt with the "absence of Muslim ritual following her death," according to the Post's report. Currently, Muslims in Missouri are buried in sections of Christian cemeteries and they are typically guided through the burial process by non-Muslims, the Post reported. (Be sure to "Like" Patch on Facebook - check out our page here.) The report also states that there are many differences in the Muslim burial process and what is normally followed by a typical funeral home, some of which …

BBB Warns Residents of Door-to-Door Scam

Young people are falsely posing as students of L’École Culinaire in an effort to get victims to buy phony magazine subscriptions, according to the Better Business Bureau.

The Better Business Bureau released the following alert Tuesday. St. Louis area residents should be alert for a new door-to-door magazine sales scam involving young people posing as students of L’École Culinaire, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns. A homeowner in the 5400 block of Pernod Avenue, in the city’s North Hampton neighborhood, said she was approached by a young man and a woman last week who asked her to buy magazine subscriptions to be sent to servicemen and women overseas. They told her that they were enrolled at the well-known culinary school in St. Louis County and were raising money to further their studies in Italy. The homeowner said she became suspicious when she asked the young woman for the name of the street where …

Do You Think Farmers' Markets Are 'Fresher'?

Local farmers’ market vendors say that the fruits and veggies they grow are superior to grocery store produce for many reasons.

Do you buy the freshest produce possible? According to many area farmers, the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store may not be as fresh as you think. With farmers' markets open now (or about to open) around the St. Louis area, including Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton, Ellisville, Wildwood, Arnold and elsewhere, we wanted to talk a little about what "fresh" means to you. Tim Hess, owner of Silent Oaks farm and a vendor at several area farmers’ markets, told Patch that most of the produce sold in local grocery stores comes from Calfornia or Florida, areas where many farms are staffed by migrant workers. “It’s a long trail and at the end of the trail you’ll find that migrant Mexican workers do …

The two greatest deterrents to lo locally grown produce and fruits are... 1. Convenience - everyone wants to have their needs met close to home, easily accessible and inexpensive 2. Instant Gratification - "I want it NOW, even though it is not in season I want it and should be able to have it!" Gone are the days of waiting for the peaches and tomatoes to ripen in the backyard! I personally would …   more ›
