Local novelist Gerry Mandel, author of Shadow and Substance: My Time With Charlie Chaplin speaks about how his hit first novel came to be, at Maryville University Thursday night, 7-8 p.m.—in Town and Country. Mandel appears as part of the St. Louis Writers Guild Lecture Series. "Learn about his passion for Chaplin, as well as how he wrote and marketed this breakout hit," according to the Guild. Sendak has died at age 83. Tell us your memories of reading his books—especially "Where the Wild Things Are."
My two children are well above the age when they'd sit still for their mother and father reading a book to them. It won't be that many years before they have their own children. They'll be doing the reading. And I have no doubt that Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" will be among the books they crack open and recite. On Tuesday, we learned that the author of perhaps one of the most famous children's books of all time had died at the age of 83. The New York Times' report said the author had died from complications after a recent stroke. Writers have lauded Sendak's worth, but in particular his ability to craft children's stories out of what might have been considered "untraditional" — monsters "roaring their terrible roars" and "…

The Manchester Board of Aldermen voted to allow a Penske truck hub to operate in the city, plus approved more money for sidewalk repairs and took steps to move ahead with the new Manchester Arts Council.
Monday night the Manchester Board of Aldermen voted on issuing a special use permit to a local business to run a Penske truck hub just off Manchester Road. Ridgway Insurance Group LLC, requested a special use permit to also operate as a Penske agent from his current location at 14575 Manchester Road. This request was not recommended by the city's Planning and Zoning Committee and Manchester's Director of Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Franz Kraintz previously pointed out concerns over traffic and noise at the public hearing for the permit request. The vote was deferred at the last two board of aldermen meetings, but after adding 13 stipulations to the agreement for the permit, a vote issuing the permit came Monday night. Those …

A Penske vote was postponed Monday night, but Manchester city leaders learned how an arts council benefits a city and what steps the city needs to take now to make its' council a reality.
Last year, the City of Manchester began looking into whether or not there was an interest in the city to create an arts council. Manchester Alderman Michael Clement said Monday night that since that time the creation of a council has received an overwhelming response from the community. As previously reported by Town and Country - Manchester Patch, several meetings have been held with residents moving forward with creating the council (Read more on the Manchester Arts Council at the end of this article.). At Monday night's Manchester Board of Aldermen meeting, Dan Tierney, deputy director of the Regional Arts Commission, updated aldermen on the progress of the newly created Manchester Arts Council. Tierney also explained how an arts …

The new hot trend in dining has nothing to do with food.
We've all done it. Here’s my story: Last week, I was waiting for the boyfriend to arrive for our sushi date. Bored, I watched couples at the tables around me, but one in particular caught my eye. Two young women with full plates of tempura and bright pink-and-green cocktails spent their entire meal engrossed in (not each other, not their food, not their drinks, but...) their phones. I swear they hardly said a word to each other the entire 45 minutes I was waiting. (I was super early, he was a little late. Typical.) As they left and the boyfriend arrived, I filled him in on the their ghastly behavior, my voice dripping with judgment. After dinner, as we sat a bar waiting for our movie to start, I was halfway into a work email when my …

Loved to use this story in my KG classroom over the years; the children loved the idea of monsters who were manageable and fun:-) We also loved "Chicken Soup With Rice" and "Pierre." I remember I had the books AND the recordings to go with--we'd sing and sing!   more ›
