Tate Matheny Drafted by Dad Mike's Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Major league baseball drafts Westminster grads Tate Matheny and Ben Turner. Matheny was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, managed by his father Mike Matheny.
A pair of Westminster Christian Academy baseball players who graduated from the Town and Country school, received the biggest call of their baseball lives Wednesday when they learned they had been selected on the third day of Major League Baseball's Entry Draft.
Ben Turner, a senior catcher at the University of Missouri who starred for the Wildcats at Westminster, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 21st round with the 658th pick overall. Turner's brother Jacob, another former Westminster star, is a pitcher in the Detroit Tigers organization. Turner graduated Westminster in 2008.
There was speculation that Tate Matheny could have been selected much earlier in the process, and as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported, his father had been open about his interest in not having the team select his son, and in addition, what it would take for Tate to turn down the opportunity to play college baseball at Missouri State.
New rules in baseball's collective bargaining agreement have put limits on what teams can spend on their top draft picks, as reported by The Sporting News, among other outlets.
Teams have until July 13 to come to agreement with players who have college eligibility remaining.
