Take Our Poll: Should Pit Bulls be Banned?
Town and Country is poised to remove its ban on pit bull and dogs that look like pit bulls. Do you agree?
Local residents Dr. Kenneth Bentley and his wife Kathleen have asked Town and Country to remove the "breed specific language" from its code regarding dog ownership. Currently, pit bulls and dogs that resemble pit bulls are deemed as "vicious" dogs and are not allowed to be kept as pets in Town and Country.
Captain Patrick Kranz of the Town and Country Police told Patch the police department had seen that the ordinance could be considered outdated. The Police Commission has been reviewing the city's animal regulations and have suggested several revisions to the board of alderman to bring the code in line with St. Louis County rules.
The board of aldermen will vote on the new ordinance August 6.

Pit Bulls are not inherently vicious; no dog really is -- it depends on the owner, the training, etc. The ordinance was based on hysteria, ignorance and the bad rap received due to criminal owners who use these dogs for fighting. Lift the stupid ban!!

I completely agree with sjd. Any dog can be mistreated and trained to be a killer by human miscreants. It is the human scum who engage in dog fighting that need to be in jail. In years past, it was the rottweilers and dobermans and german shepherds that were trained this way. Now it happens to be pitbulls. Having said that, some dogs OF ANY BREED that have been turned into killers may not be redeemable and must be destroyed for safety of all, but this must be judged on an individual basis and not as a blanket statement.

True - the Pit Bull was bred to fight other dogs but they were also bred to be very people-friendly - handlers wanted a dog that was easy to control. Vicious Pit Bulls are the result of owner treatment PERIOD.

Look at old family pictures from the early 1900's. Every family had a pitbull, they were known as the family nanny for the children. Cruel, self-centered idiots are doing their best to ruin a beautiful dog. Pitbulls are people pleasers and idiots are taking advantage of that trait and using it for their own monsterous, greedy purposes. Punish bad owners not the innocent dogs.

Mayor Hine (West Fork, AR) recently stated in a City Council meeting that was discussing banning breeds considered "dangerous":
"The animal is always a victim when its owner fails to recognize it for what is and treat it in the manner it was born to, a sentient being with its own genetic and cultural history. Animals are not our children and they are not human, but they are definitely entitled to be treated humanely.
Mayor Hine put the blame SOLELY AND FIRMLY on irresponsible dog owners. "I don't want to punish the animal, but we have to get at the irresponsible people somehow, and this is the way that we send the message," she said.

It is stupid, it is the same as labeling a person for the sins of the father.

They should be banned because they are naturally that way since they were bred that way to be aggressive and violent. They should be seen more like wild animals, the difference between a house cat and a lion. Having them as pets is like allowing a bear, croc, or another wild animal be kept. However the way they are raised does impact their temperament, but the majority of people see them for illegal purposes and for profit, besides any animal can bite but a pit bull can inflict more damage than the largest poodle, a pit will tend to go a more aggressive route than most other dogs. Therefore pit bulls should be banned.
