Ohio-based J.M. Smucker Co. is voluntarily recalling 16-ounce jars of Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky, according to the Food and Drug Adminstration.

The recall is to due to possible salmonella contamination.

The recalled peanut butter was distributed in many states, including Missouri. The jars in question would have been purchased between Nov. 8 and 17 and have a "best if used by" date of Aug. 3, 2012 and Aug. 4, 2012. They also contain the production codes 1307004 and 1308004.

In the St. Louis area, Dierbergs Spokesperson Todd Vasel tells Patch all of the Dierbergs were alerted to the recall and have checked for the recalled peanut butter.

"We did not have any of the affected product in our store," Vasel said.

Lori Willis with St. Louis area Schnucks tells Patch the stores in our area are not involved in the recall either.

Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people recover within a week, but some may require hospitalization; in rare cases, the infection can be fatal.

Smucker's said no illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA.

The FDA reports the peanut butter was distributed in Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
